A 50‑year‑old man was killed and at least 50 others injured when a Selfie Paribahan bus veered off the Dhaka–Aricha Highway and plunged into a ditch near Barangail bus stand on Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Delowar Hossain of Phulhara village in Ghior upazila.
Eyewitnesses and officials from the Ghior Fire Service and Barangail Highway Police said the Dhaka‑bound bus (Dhaka Metro Ba‑14‑4388), carrying about 50 passengers from Paturia, lost control at around 7:30am and fell into a deep roadside ditch.
Injured passengers, including Mujibor, Kubbat, and Belayet Hossain, alleged reckless driving. They claimed the driver was speeding when he lost control, causing the crash. Almost all passengers sustained injuries of varying severity.
Barangail Highway Police and fire service personnel rushed to the scene for rescue operations. A wrecker was later deployed to recover the vehicle.
Harun Ar Rashid, officer‑in‑charge of Barangail Highway Police, confirmed the fatality. He said preliminary findings indicate the bus crashed due to reckless speeding.
Local residents helped send the injured to Ghior Upazila Health Complex, Munnu Medical College Hospital, and Manikganj Sadar Hospital. Several victims remain in critical condition.
Shibalaya Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Manisha Rani Karmakar said police have been instructed to strictly monitor vehicle speed and verify fitness documentation. She added that more stringent measures will be adopted to prevent such accidents.
