Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has appointed Professor Mohammad Shariful Islam as its new Pro-Vice-Chancellor for a four-year term, with the civil engineering academic assuming office on 25 July after a Ministry of Education notification issued on 22 July.
Professor Mohammad Shariful Islam succeeds Professor Abdul Hasib Chowdhury as BUET’s fourth Pro-Vice-Chancellor. He is currently Director of the Research and Innovation Centre for Science and Engineering (RISE) at the university, BUET said in a press release.
Mohammad Shariful Islam graduated with distinction in Civil Engineering from BUET in 1997 and joined the university as a lecturer in the same year. He was promoted to professor in 2013.
He earned a PhD from Saitama University in Japan in 2002 before completing two years of postdoctoral research at the same institution.
Born in Kotbari, Cumilla, he ranked 12th in the combined merit list in the 1988 Secondary School Certificate examination from Government Laboratory High School, Cumilla. He later secured second place in the combined merit list in the 1990 Higher Secondary Certificate examination from Cumilla Victoria Government College.
Throughout his academic career, Mohammad Shariful Islam has published research papers, knowledge products, codes and design materials in national and international journals, conference proceedings, seminars and books.
According to the press release, he has received 29 national and international awards and honours in recognition of his research and academic achievements.
His vetiver-based bioengineering technology has been applied in infrastructure development and environmental conservation projects in Bangladesh as well as Cambodia and Indonesia.
BUET expressed confidence that the appointment would help strengthen the university’s progress in education, research and innovation under Mohammad Shariful Islam’s leadership.
