Miscreants exploded a crude bomb at the main gate of St Mary’s Cathedral Church in Dhaka’s Kakrail area on Friday night.
The incident took place around 10:45pm, Ramna Police Station’s sub-inspector Mizanur Rahman told Times of Bangladesh.
He said, “No one was injured. The miscreants fled immediately after hurling the bombs.”
The church is located near the chief justice’s residence and the residential complex of court judges at Kakrail. The Roman Catholic church was established in 1956 and is also known as the “Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.”
Another bomb was found unexploded inside the church and was later defused by members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Bomb Disposal Unit, SI Mizanur said.
He also said a police team rushed to the scene after receiving the report. “Efforts are underway to identify the attackers using CCTV footage,” he added.
Ramna Police Station’s SI Sushanta said, “At 10:25pm, the miscreants threw two crude bombs toward the church from a motorcycle.”
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebur Rahman on Saturday said that law enforcers are investigating the bomb blast incident.
A bomb disposal team and forensic unit from the DMP have also collected evidence from the scene for further examination, he added.
Earlier on 8 October, two bombs were exploded by unidentified assailants at the main gate of Holy Rosary Church at Tejkunipara in Tejgaon. Two more unexploded bombs were found near the site.
