President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir reached Thakurgaon on Sunday for a two‑day trip, his first visit to his home district since taking office.
A helicopter carrying the president landed at Shaheed Mohammad Ali Stadium around 1pm Sunday.
He was greeted with flowers by the convener of the citizens’ reception committee along with local administrative and political leaders.
From the stadium, he travelled by road to the Circuit House, where he was accorded an armed salute and a guard of honour.
After the formalities at the Circuit House, he visited the graves of his parents, offered prayers for the forgiveness of their souls, and held a special doa and munajat. He then went to his ancestral home in Tatipara.
Following lunch and a brief rest at his ancestral residence, he is scheduled to attend a public reception organised by the district citizens’ committee at the Thakurgaon Government Boys’ High School ground in the afternoon.
Security has been tightened in Thakurgaon for President Fakhrul’s visit. The town has been decorated with banners, festoons, and arches. Local residents expressed joy at seeing their beloved leader return to his native soil after assuming the nation’s highest office.
On Monday, the second day of his visit, the president will lay the foundation stone of Thakurgaon University.
