An initiative has been taken to implement “e-Parliament” system aimed at establishing a paperless, modern, and technology-driven legislature in Bangladesh.
The decision was discussed during a courtesy meeting with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad. The meeting was attended by a delegation including Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal, alongside committee members Nayab Yusuf Ahmed and ABM Mosharraf Hossain.
During the meeting, the delegation emphasised the necessity of implementing the system to make parliamentary operations more dynamic, modern, and technology-oriented. The proposed system will feature both Bengali and English language versions, facilitating easier, faster, and more effective management, preservation, and exchange of parliamentary documents and information.
To advance the initiative, the speaker directed the formation of a committee chaired by the deputy speaker. This committee will review the structure, implementation process, required technological infrastructure, and other relevant aspects of the proposed system to formulate necessary action plans.
Hafiz instructed that a presentation on the e-Parliament system be delivered by the end of this September. The presentation will outline the system’s operational procedures, technical capabilities, implementation plans, and other key details.
The implementation of the e-Parliament system is being highlighted as a significant milestone for the current government.
Once active, the digital system will manage parliamentary activities and documentation, which is expected to reduce paper consumption, save time and administrative costs, and enhance speed, efficiency, and coordination in legislative affairs.
To ensure technical and other required assistance for the project, a decision was made to liaise with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), donor countries, and donor organisations. Their cooperation will be sought during the subsequent phases of the project as necessary.
The initiative is viewed as a crucial and timely step towards establishing a paperless and technology-dependent parliament. Senior officials from Secretariat were also present during the meeting.
