BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed on Wednesday alleged that the party is not aware of the purpose of the National Consensus Commission, questioning the rationale behind its latest proposals.
“The purpose of the commission was to establish consensus. But the proposal that the National Consensus Commission has now made will create division and discord in the nation, not consensus. We do not know what their purpose is or what they want to achieve through this,” he made these remarks while speaking to journalists at a seminar at Hotel Lakeshore.
Expressing the party’s disappointment over the activities of the National Consensus Commission and the interim government, he said, “The issues included in the document signed on 17 October are completely absent from the recommendations regarding the implementation of the July Charter. Although it was said that a referendum would be held on the 48 points, that discussion did not take place with us.”
Salahuddin said the document signed by political parties at the South Plaza of the National Parliament was supposed to manifest the issues discussed with the Commission, but that consistency is missing. “What was signed in the July Charter is missing, but the proposals given by the commission and a few parties are there,” he added.
Salahuddin also termed the recent decisions regarding the Representation of the People Order (RPO) and alliance symbols as biased. “Any political party in an alliance had the freedom to contest either under its own symbol or that of the alliance.
Suddenly, in an undemocratic manner, they declared that even if they are in an alliance, they must contest under their own symbols,” he said.
He expressed hope that the current government would act neutrally, in the manner of a caretaker administration.
