BNP leader and Member of Parliament Md Barkat Ullah Bulu is set to become the new president of the historic Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited after being elected unopposed.
The development came after two candidates withdrew from the presidential race during the club’s election process on Thursday. The candidates who stepped aside were BNP leader and MP Zainul Abedin Farroque and prominent sports organiser Sajed A A Adel.
Both had initially collected nomination papers for the presidency as well as for director positions. Their withdrawal from the presidential contest paved the way for Bulu to secure the post without a vote.
Although voting had originally been scheduled, the formal announcement of the club’s new leadership will now be made during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 9 March.
Elections were also planned for 16 director positions. Initially, 28 candidates submitted nominations for these posts. However, 12 candidates withdrew their nominations earlier in the week, reducing the final list.
On Friday, the election commission published the final list of 17 candidates, which includes Bulu as the sole presidential candidate.
The candidates for the 16 director posts are Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan, Mahbub Ul Anam, Mostafa Kamal, Mostakur Rahman, Masuduzzaman, Enayet Hossain Siraj, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Abul Kalam, Mirza Yasir Abbas, Zahir Ahmed, MA Salam, Nilofar Chowdhury Moni, Sajed A A Adel, Syed Rumman Bin Wali Sabbir, Mahmud Hasan Khan and Zakir Hossain Chowdhury.
The election commission is expected to officially confirm the names of the 17 elected members of the new board on Monday, 9 March.
Bulu will become the fifth president of Mohammedan Sporting Club since it became a limited company. Qutub Uddin Ahmed served as the first president in 2011, followed by Mohammad Obaidul Karim and Advocate AM Amin Uddin.
The current president, General Mohammad Abdul Mubin (retd), will be replaced by Bulu when the new leadership is formally confirmed on 9 March.
