Two parliamentary election candidates from BNP and Khelafat Majlis in Chandpur have received show-cause notices for violating the election code of conduct.
The Election Investigation and Judicial Committee issued the notices to BNP’s Md Jalal Uddin in Chandpur-2 (Matlab North and Matlab South) and Khelafat Majlis candidate Tofayel Ahmed in Chandpur-3 (Sadar-Haimchar).
The Election Investigation and Judicial Committee informed the media on Thursday evening.
According to officials, a Facebook post sought votes for Jalal Uddin by sharing a photocard with the paddy sheaf symbol in the ‘Matlab Uttar Upazila BNP’ group. The post came from an account named Alamgir Sarkar and breached the election code.
In Chandpur-3, candidate Tofayel Ahmed ran campaign advertisements on 12 January in the local Daily Meghna Barta.
The notice said the code prohibits any campaign activity within three weeks of the election date. The committee ordered Tofayel Ahmed to appear through an authorised representative at the Civil Judge Court in Matlab on Monday at 11:30am and submit a written explanation.
Jalal Uddin must appear at 10:00am the same day at the Civil Judge Court in Shahrasti.
The notice added that failure to offer a satisfactory explanation will trigger a report to the Bangladesh Election Commission for legal action.
Civil Judge Shampa Islam, chair of the Chandpur-3 committee, instructed Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station to serve the notice promptly.
Civil Judge Shuvo Islam, chair of the Chandpur-2 committee, gave similar instructions to the Officers-in-Charge of Matlab North and Matlab South police stations.
