The prime accused in the murder case of Sherpur Jamaat-e-Islami leader Maulana Md Rezaul Karim has filed a bail petition with the High Court.
The petition was submitted on behalf of the prime accused Md Mahmudul Haque Rubel, BNP candidate for Sherpur-3 constituency, lawyer Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal told reporters on Sunday.
Maulana Rezaul Karim served as secretary of Sreebardi upazila Jamaat-e-Islami. He died following violent clashes between BNP and Jamaat leaders and activists in Sherpur last month.
The violence broke out on 28 January in the afternoon at Jhenaigati Stadium during a programme to read out election manifestos of candidates contesting from Sherpur-3, comprising Sreebardi and Jhenaigati upazilas.
Tensions erupted over seating arrangements in the front row, leading to clashes between BNP and Jamaat activists.
Although the situation was initially brought under control, violence flared up again before evening. Jamaat candidate Nuruzzaman Badal attempted to move towards the town with his supporters but faced resistance from the administration.
This triggered a second round of clashes with BNP activists.
Maulana Rezaul Karim sustained critical injuries in the violence. He died later that night while being taken to Mymensingh for treatment.
On 30 January, his wife Marjia filed a murder case with Jhenaigati Police Station.
The case named 234 accused and listed another 500 unidentified individuals, bringing the total number of accused to 734.
