A bKash businessman was mugged of Tk6 lakh in the Paikpara Cross Road area of Habiganj Sadar Upazila on Wednesday night. While two hijackers were apprehended by locals with domestic weapons, their accomplices managed to flee with the snatched cash.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:50am in front of “Doctor Bari” at Paikpara Cross Road.
Local sources said a group of hijackers launched a sudden attack on the businessman, Khejir Mia, and snatched approximately Tk6 lakh from him. Hearing his screams, residents from the vicinity rushed to the spot and gave chase to the muggers.
The locals managed to intercept two of the hijackers, seizing a motorcycle and a dagger from their possession. However, several of their associates escaped with the stolen money.
The two apprehended suspects, one hailing from the Poil area and the other from Paikpara were later handed over to the Habiganj Sadar Police Station. Upon receiving the news, police arrived at the scene to bring the situation under control and have commenced interrogating the detainees.
Efforts are reportedly underway to identify and arrest the remaining suspects who fled the scene. The incident has caused a stir in the locality, with residents demanding swift recovery of the funds and legal action against all involved.
Officer-in-Charge of Habiganj Sadar Model Thana Zahidul Haque confirmed the matter.
