A complaint has been filed against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following her remarks concerning the arrest of suspects linked to the killing of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
According to Indian news agency ANI, the complaint was lodged on Thursday at the Siliguri Cyber Police Station by lawyer Rinki Chatterjee Singh.
In the complaint, the petitioner alleged that Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee, speaking at a political programme, claimed she had held “secret discussions” with Indian Home Minister Amit Shah.
She also allegedly connected a political killing in neighbouring Bangladesh with the Indian government and the home minister, along with making additional claims during her speech.
The complaint further stated that such comments were made publicly with the intent to damage the image and credibility of the central government at the international level and to create hostility between two sovereign nations.
It also accused the former chief minister of making provocative and defamatory remarks against constitutional institutions and security agencies, including the Election Commission of India and central armed forces responsible for maintaining law and order during elections.
The petitioner said Mamata Banerjee has repeatedly made inflammatory statements at rallies, political platforms, and in media interactions, questioning the integrity and neutrality of India’s constitutional bodies and attempting to create public distrust.
The controversy originates from a recent speech delivered by Mamata Banerjee at a protest event in Kolkata’s Dharmatala area, where she strongly criticised the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at both state and central levels.
During the speech, she referred to the arrest of individuals in West Bengal allegedly linked to a major killing in Bangladesh last year, claiming that Home Minister Amit Shah had personally instructed her to remain silent on the matter.
Her remarks were widely circulated by Indian media, and the complaint was filed a day after the speech.
Although Mamata Banerjee did not explicitly name the victim, the context of her remarks suggests she was referring to the killing of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Osman Hadi in Dhaka in December 2025.
Advocate Rinki Chatterjee told BBC Bangla that Mamata Banerjee, as chief minister, had taken an oath to uphold the sovereignty, security, and integrity of the country, but her comments could potentially strain relations between India and Bangladesh.
She further said India maintains friendly relations with neighbouring countries and noted that neither the Bangladesh government nor the victim’s family has accused India in the incident.
According to her, the remarks could therefore create diplomatic tensions and encourage anti-India sentiment in Bangladesh, potentially affecting minority communities.
