Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed has said special operations will continue to build a peaceful and safe Dhaka.
Briefing journalists at the DMP Media Centre on Thursday afternoon, he said no major accidents, sabotage, or terrorist activities occurred in the capital during the Eid holidays thanks to public cooperation. All DMP units worked tirelessly to ensure security at cattle markets, bus and launch terminals, railway stations, shopping malls, financial institutions, Eid congregation grounds, residential areas, and vacant houses.
Between 1 May and 2 June, DMP arrested 2,844 people, including 658 extortionists, 971 muggers/robbers/terrorists, and 1,215 drug traffickers. Seized items included 744kg of cannabis, 179,000 yaba tablets, 405 grams of heroin, 1,281 bottles of phensedyl, six pistols, 21 rounds of bullets, 11 cocktails, and other weapons.
Police also arrested nine people, including six Chinese nationals, involved in online gambling, cyber fraud, and illegal digital financial transaction rings. Recovered items included 523 mobile phones, 293 SIM cards, four microbuses, six private cars, a covered van, a bus, nine CNGs, and 15 motorcycles.
In May, DMP traffic division filed 38,284 cases against traffic law violators, including 672 through AI-based enforcement, collecting Tk8.71 crore in fines. Special metropolitan magistrates disposed of 337 road transport act cases, imposing Tk6.64 lakh in fines and jailing one person.
DMP arrested the main accused and another suspect in the rape and beheading of seven-year-old Ramisa Akhtar in Pallabi. In the brutal murder of Saudi expatriate Mokarram, whose body was cut into eight pieces, CTC arrested four people, including the mastermind Taslima Akhtar. Two accused have given confessional statements.
In Jatrabari, police arrested three over the gang-rape and murder of a mentally unstable woman, with one confessing. Detectives arrested three members of a counterfeit currency gang with Tk34 lakh in fake notes and equipment.
During the seven-day Eid holiday, no robberies or sensational crimes occurred in the megacity of 2.5 to 3 crore people. Only a few isolated theft and snatching incidents were reported, reflecting a comparatively stable law and order situation, the DMP commissioner said.
