Members of the Special Response Battalion (SRB) have arrested a bank official in connection with the murder of university student Ayman Md Azmul Hossain in Khulna.
The arrestee, Md Hasnat Habib Rifat, 30, is a cash officer at a branch of Krishi Bank in Khulna. He hails from Gunergati under Sirajganj Sadar upazila and is a former student of Khulna University.
Azmul was a first‑year student in the Department of English at North Western University, Khulna.
According to a press release issued by SRB‑6 on Tuesday, Rifat was arrested around 2:30am during an operation in Nesarabad, Pirojpur. Officials said he was identified from video footage showing his presence at the scene and participation in beating Azmul. During initial interrogation, he confessed to involvement and admitted striking Azmul twice with a stick.
Rifat was handed over to Harintana Police Station for further legal action.
Azmul’s father, Kutubuddin, filed a case Saturday night, naming four Khulna University students and 20–25 unidentified individuals as accused.
SRB‑6 said drives are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects based on information provided in Rifat’s confession.
