A local court on Tuesday sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for killing a child in Jhenaidah.
The victim, Saima Akhtar Saba, 3, was the daughter of Saidul Islam of Pobhati village in Jhenaidah town. She went missing on the morning of 3 December 2025 while playing near her home, after which her father filed a General Diary (GD) with Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station.
Around 9:30pm the same day, police recovered Saba’s body from inside the house of her neighbour, Akhtaruzzaman Masum, in the same village.
Judge Md Helal Uddin of the Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge‑1 pronounced the verdict against the accused, Shantona Khatun.
Shantona was initially detained for questioning and later arrested on charges of involvement in the murder. In a confessional statement, she said Saba had fought with her son, Abu Zubayer, while playing. She struck Saba on the head, killing her instantly, and then hid the body inside the house.
Manoj Kumar Ghosh, then sub‑inspector and investigation officer of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, submitted the charge sheet on 30 December 2025.
A total of 27 witnesses testified during the trial.
