Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered a large cache of explosives and illegal weapons near the Barlekha border in Moulvibazar district during a special operation.
Officials said the operation, launched on Tuesday around 12:10am, followed a tip-off that miscreants had crossed into Bangladesh near border pillar 1375/M with high explosives and illegal arms.
The intruders fled into the nearby dense forest when BGB patrols approached.
Acting on the intelligence, a combined team led by Lieutenant Colonel Md Ataur Rahman of the 52 BGB Battalion and Major M Jahid from Borolekha’s election base camp at Chotolekha High School conducted a coordinated search.
They later recovered explosives and weapons hidden in Taradorm, a remote area of South Shahbazpur Union.
The seized items included 24 Power Gel Nine high powered explosive tubes )manufactured by SBL Energy Limited, Nagpur, India), 23 detonators, 15 metres of detonator cord, and three pipe guns.
Officials said the attempted smuggling of high explosives and weapons ahead of the upcoming national elections appeared to be a clear attempt to threaten national security and disrupt the electoral process.
Legal action in connection with the seizure is underway, and detailed investigations continue in coordination with relevant intelligence agencies and law enforcement.
BGB assured that it remains vigilant and fully prepared to safeguard the country’s borders, prevent the smuggling of arms and explosives, and ensure a free, fair and peaceful national election.
