A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted a five-day remand for Mohammad Rahim, identified as the shooter in the murder of former Swechchhasebak Dal leader Azizur Rahman Musabbir.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman passed the order after hearing a remand petition filed by the investigation officer.
DB Police Inspector Mohammad Aminul Islam of the Tejgaon division produced Rahim before the court and sought a seven-day remand.
In the petition, the investigation officer said that another arrested shooter, Jinnat, had confessed in court, naming Rahim as the person who fired the fatal shots at Musabbir. He also claimed that CCTV footage from the incident site supported the allegation.
Aminul Islam further said Rahim’s remand was needed to recover the weapons used in the crime, identify the main planner, trace other accomplices, and uncover the source of financial transactions linked to the murder.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court approved the five-day remand.
According to case documents, on the night of 7 January, around 8:30pm, assailants on a motorcycle opened fire at Musabbir in a lane beside Star Kabab restaurant in West Tejturi Para, Dhaka. Abu Sufian Bapari Masud, who was with him, was also injured.
Musabbir, former general secretary of the Dhaka City North unit of Swechchhasebak Dal and former joint secretary of the central committee, was taken to BRB Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Masud was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment. Masud is the general secretary of the van workers’ union under Tejgaon Police Station.
Musabbir’s wife, Suraiya Begum, filed a murder case against unidentified assailants with Tejgaon Police Station on 8 January.
Police said they have arrested two shooters, including Jinnat, the main coordinator Mohammad Billal, Abdul Qadir who helped the accused hide, and Mohammad Riaz, who conducted reconnaissance in the area a day before the attack.
During the arrests, police seized an unregistered motorcycle allegedly used in the crime and Tk6,000 in cash. Jinnat had given a confession in court on 12 January.
