Border Guard Bangladesh has called on journalists and residents of Lalmonirhat to help stop rumours and smuggling along the district’s border, saying community cooperation is essential to strengthening security.

Brigadier General ASM Naser, Region Commander of the North-West Region, made the appeal on Thursday while inaugurating the new Chaturbari BOP camp in Patgram upazila.

He said certain groups were spreading rumours and confusion in the border areas, but noted that the media had played a positive role in countering misinformation and urged continued support in preventing false reports.

Rangpur Sector Commander Colonel SM Shafiqur Rahman and 61 BGB Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Sheikh Mohammad Musahid Masum were also present.

The Region Commander formally inaugurated the Chaturbari BOP — located between the Dhabolguri and Kharijajongra BOPs — and planted a sapling at the new camp. Senior BGB officers and local dignitaries joined the programme.

According to BGB sources, the Teesta Battalion is responsible for securing nearly 200 kilometres of the north-western border, including surveillance, preventing smuggling, stopping illegal infiltration and maintaining overall border security.

Officials said the long gap between the Dhabolguri and Kharijajongra BOPs created an operational weakness. The new Chaturbari BOP has been set up to close that gap and strengthen efforts against smuggling, drug trafficking, human trafficking and illegal border crossings.
