The Bangladesh Football Federation has decided to send its Under-23 team to the upcoming four-nation tournament in the Maldives, instead of the senior national side.

The Maldives Football Association is organising the tournament to mark Independence Day. Bangladesh received the invitation in January and accepted it, before choosing the youth squad for the event.

Maruful Haque will be the head coach of the Under-23 team. He is currently working with Abahani Limited Dhaka. The domestic league is set to end on 23 May, while the tournament will run from 1 to 10 June.

The Under-23 side last played in the AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers in Vietnam. At that time, Saiful Bari Titu, the federation’s technical director, was in charge. However, he could not be in the dugout for any match due to illness.

Bangladesh will compete alongside Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the tournament.
