A Dhaka court on Monday revoked the bail order for Lavlu Mollah Shishir, a deputy registrar of Dhaka University (DU), who is a suspect in a case involving an attack on former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s motorcade.
The order was delivered by Judge Md Wahiduzzaman of the 17th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka following a hearing on Monday.
The court had previously granted bail to Lavlu on Sunday, but the decision was overturned the following day. He is a former vice president of the Masterda Surja Sen Hall unit of the Chhatra League.
Court proceedings
According to the Bench Assistant of the relevant court, Md Ashraful Amin, the court initially granted the accused bail on Sunday against a bond of Tk1,000. However, the defence lawyers were unable to submit the bail bond to the court within the required time on Sunday.
When the lawyers attempted to file the bail bond on Monday morning, the court rejected the submission and ordered the revocation of his bail.
Background of arrest
Lavlu was detained by students at midnight on 17 November last year after he reportedly posted a photocard on social media featuring the text “I don’t care.”
This post followed the announcement of a death sentence for former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in a case involving crimes against humanity.
The students handed him over to the Shahbagh Police, who subsequently showed him arrested as a suspect in the motorcade attack case.
The 2015 motorcade attack
The charges relate to an incident on 22 April 2015, when Begum Khaleda Zia, the then chairperson of BNP, left her Gulshan residence with a motorcade to campaign for the BNP-backed candidate Tabith Awal in the Dhaka North City Corporation elections.
The motorcade reached the Banglamotor signal in Shahbagh at approximately 5:30pm, where it was subjected to a pre-planned attack.
During the assault, 12 to 14 vehicles in the convoy were vandalised, four motorcycles were set on fire, and several of Khaleda Zia’s security personnel were injured. A case regarding this incident was filed at Shahbagh Police Station on 23 November 2024.
