In the Begum Rokeya University development fund embezzlement case, a bail bond for former vice‑chancellor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah has been submitted on a Tk100,000 surety, with the condition of depositing his passport.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shahjahan Kabir allowed submission of the bail bond after a hearing on Monday. Following that, lawyer Mohsin Reza said there is no legal bar now to his release.
Reza and fellow counsel Mahima Bandhan said that Kalimullah had secured bail from the High Court on 14 June. Since there are no other pending cases, there is no legal obstacle for his release from jail, they added.
The case was also scheduled that day for submission of the investigation report and the accused’s appearance. Kalimullah was produced in court from prison and later sent back after the hearing. The court fixed 23 September for submission of the investigation report.
Detectives arrested Kalimullah from his Mohammadpur residence on 7 August last year. His bail plea was rejected the same day, and he was sent to jail.
The case, filed on 18 June against Kalimullah and four others, alleges misappropriation of university development funds.
According to the case statement, the accused colluded, breached trust, and abused power by altering the approved Development Project Proposal (DPP). They signed contracts worth over Tk30 crore without ministry approval.
