Mir Shakrul Alam Simanto has resigned from his position as a Bangladesh Cricket Board director just one day after being elected.
Simanto submitted his resignation letter to BCB president Tamim Iqbal on Monday. He cited business commitments as the reason behind his decision.
The Rajshahi representative was elected unopposed in the BCB election on June 7. He was the only candidate from the region and secured a place on the board without a contest.
In his resignation letter, Simanto said he currently carries major responsibilities in his family’s business activities. He noted that his father, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, is occupied with government duties, leaving him with increased business commitments.
Simanto said he would not be able to give enough time and attention to the responsibilities of a BCB director. He added that stepping aside was the right decision for the interests of the board.
He later submitted the resignation during a BCB board meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
The resignation did not come as a surprise. Before the election, Simanto had already expressed his intention not to serve as a BCB director despite being set to win the Rajshahi seat uncontested.
Daily Times of Bangladesh tried to contact Simanto for comment after his resignation. However, he did not respond to calls or messages.
His departure creates an early vacancy in the newly elected BCB board, which was formed following Sunday’s election.
