Wednesday, March 11 marks the birthday of popular Dhallywood actor Bapparaj. Although he has been away from the big screen for quite some time, discussions about him frequently resurface on social media. Scenes, dialogues and songs from his old films often bring the actor back into public conversation.
Bapparaj, widely known as the ‘tragedy hero’ of Dhaka cinema, is the son of legendary actor Raj Razzak. During the late 1980s and 1990s, he became one of the most recognisable faces in the industry. His performances in romantic dramas, particularly love triangle stories with tragic endings, left a lasting impression on audiences.
Several songs from his films remain memorable among viewers, including ‘Tumi Bondhu Amar Chiro Sukhe Theko’, ‘Amito Ekdin Chole Jabo’ and ‘Tomra Sobai Thako Sukhe’. His emotional performances in such sequences helped cement his reputation as a leading figure in tragic romantic roles.
Throughout his career, Bapparaj was frequently cast as the self sacrificing lover in romantic dramas. In many films, his character would step aside in the final moments, allowing the woman he loved to unite with someone else. Born Rezaul Karim, Bapparaj began his film career in 1986 under the guidance of his father. He made his debut with the film ‘Chapa Dangar Bou’, directed by Raj Razzak. Over the following decades, he appeared in more than a hundred films.
Among his notable romantic dramas are ‘Premer Somadhi’, ‘Prem Geet’, ‘Harano Prem’, ‘Bhulona Amay’, ‘Buk Vora Bhalobasa’ and ‘Valobasha Kare Koy’. He also appeared in other popular films including ‘Baba Keno Chakor’, ‘Santan Jokhon Shotru’ and ‘Jabab Chai’.
In addition to acting, Bapparaj has also worked as a director. He has directed television dramas such as ‘Kacher Manush Raater Manush’ and ‘Ekjon Lekhok’ and produced the film ‘Kartuj’.
He was last seen on the big screen in ‘Poramon 2’, where he played the elder brother of the lead character portrayed by Siam Ahmed. The performance once again drew appreciation from audiences.
At present, the actor is mainly focused on his business ventures.
