Bangladesh’s top-tier domestic football competition has been renamed after more than a decade. Previously known as the Premier Football League, the league will now officially be called the Bangladesh Football League (BFL), following an emergency BFF executive committee meeting on 24 September and consultations with the clubs.
The league was first launched in 2007 under the recommendation of the Asian Football Confederation as the B League. In 2008, after Kazi Salahuddin became BFF president, the name was expanded to Bangladesh League to avoid confusion with second-tier competitions abroad. In 2011, it was rebranded again as the Bangladesh Premier Football League, a title it has held for over ten years.
The recent renaming, approved by BFF president Tabith Awal and league committee chairman Imrul Hasan, aims to create a clearer identity for football and distinguish it from the cricket BPL. The league logo will also be updated to reflect the new branding.
The season kicks off tomorrow at Munshiganj and Manikganj. With the decision made just a day ago, banners and boards are being updated. Previous seasons were sponsored by Bashundhara Group, but a new sponsor is expected this year, with finalisation by the BFF marketing committee underway.
