The Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court has granted a 6-day remand for former Member of Parliament for Narail-1 constituency and executive member of the district Awami League, Kabirul Haque Mukti (55), and one other person. Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah’s court in Dhaka passed the order on Thursday after hearing both the state and the defence.
The other accused sent to remand is Md Mozammel Haque (67), an executive member of the central Awami League.
While being brought from the court lock-up to the courtroom and again when he was taken back, Mukti chanted the slogan “Joy Bangla”, with several pro-Awami League lawyers joining the chorus of “Joy Bangla” in the courtroom.
On Thursday, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Md Abdus Salam of Gulshan Police Station, produced the accused in court and sought a 10-day remand. Public prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi argued in favor of granting the remand
During the remand hearing, Omar Faruk Faruqi, representing the state, said, “The accused, Kabirul Haque Mukti, made a speech in Parliament where he stood up and made derogatory remarks about martyred President Ziaur Rahman. Furthermore, he is a named accused in a murder case in his own area. There are also allegations that he did not carry out development work in his area during his tenure as MP.”
Conversely, defence lawyers Jahangir Alam and Md Kayes Ahmed Ornob applied for the cancellation of the remand and sought bail. After hearing both sides, the judge rejected the bail plea and ordered the remand. The accused were arrested by Gulshan Police from the Niketan area of the capital on Wednesday around 9pm.
According to the case details, on September 12 at around 1:30pm, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and the currently suspended Awami League brought out a procession on the bridge south of Dr Fazle Rabbi Park under Gulshan Police Station jurisdiction. During the procession, they chanted provocative slogans with the intention of destabilising the state.
The protesters also attempted to vandalise vehicles on the road, creating fear among the public. Sub-Inspector Md Mahabub Hossain of Gulshan Police Station filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act regarding this incident.
Kabirul Haque Mukti won the 2008 9th National Parliamentary election from Narail-1 constituency as a rebel candidate of the Awami League. Later, he became a Member of Parliament in the three controversial elections of 2014, 2018, and 2024 as a candidate with the ‘Boat’ symbol.
He is a named accused in the FIR of the Hasim murder case of Hamidpur Union, related to establishing dominance in his area. Furthermore, he has long faced various allegations including establishing dominance, tender manipulation, and extortion.
