In a significant step to deepen cultural and linguistic relations, Bangladesh and the Maldives have pledged to strengthen their historical ties.
A courtesy meeting between Dr Md Nazmul Islam, the Bangladeshi High Commissioner to the Maldives, and Adam Naseer Ibrahim, the Maldivian Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage, marked the beginning of a new phase in bilateral cooperation.
The meeting, held on Thursday in the Maldivian capital, explored the possibilities of enhanced cooperation in cultural, linguistic, and academic fields, based on the two nations’ rich shared heritage.
Minister Ibrahim highlighted the deep cultural connection between Bangladesh and the Maldives, particularly emphasising the linguistic similarities between the Bangla and Dhivehi languages. He expressed that these linguistic and cultural similarities significantly strengthen the bond between the two peoples.
Minister Ibrahim proposed several initiatives to further solidify these ties, including the renewal of the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cultural Cooperation. He suggested the involvement of Bangladeshi experts and researchers in fields like anthropology, archaeology, heritage preservation, and cultural studies.
Ibrahim also proposed short-term training programs, academic exchanges, and joint research projects on coastal heritage, marine archaeology, and sociology, as well as the translation and promotion of Dhivehi books in Bangladesh.
In response, High Commissioner Dr Md Nazmul Islam expressed Bangladesh’s full support for these initiatives. He highlighted that the strong cultural bond between the two countries provides a solid foundation for diplomatic relations.
“We want to leverage that bond through the ‘Power of Bonding’,” he said. Dr. Islam emphasized the potential of translating Maldivian literary works and research mentioning Bangladesh into Bangla, which would bring the two peoples even closer.
He also proposed increasing cultural harmony through joint seminars, art exhibitions, academic exchanges, and organizing traditional festivals.
Both parties agreed to implement these initiatives in the near future through the signing of a new MoU between the relevant ministries and agencies.
In a gesture of goodwill, High Commissioner Nazmul Islam presented Minister Ibrahim with his book titled “Power of Bonding.” In this book, Dr. Islam introduces a new concept of cultural diplomacy, public diplomacy, and soft power. The book has already been preserved in the libraries of prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the diplomatic, cultural, and academic relationship between Bangladesh and the Maldives, reinforcing the ‘Power of Bonding’ as a core element of their growing partnership.
