The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) is developing a web-based platform to make open-ended mutual fund transactions easier, allowing investors to buy and redeem fund units through a digital system.

The proposed platform will provide a single channel for unit creation and redemption, aiming to improve investor access, increase transparency and expand investment options beyond traditional share trading.

DSE organised a workshop on Monday to discuss the proposed order collection system for open-ended mutual funds, bringing together officials from the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), asset management companies and the exchange.

BSEC Commissioner Md Nafiz Al Tarik said the platform would play an important role in developing the country’s mutual fund industry and improving facilities for investors.

“Technology-driven initiatives are important to expand investor participation and strengthen the mutual fund industry,” he said.

The initiative comes as Bangladesh’s capital market seeks to broaden investment opportunities through more diversified financial products.

Digital route for fund transactions

Under the proposed system, investors will be able to submit applications for buying and redeeming open-ended mutual fund units through the DSE platform using desktop or mobile applications.

Unlike closed-end funds, open-ended mutual funds continuously issue and repurchase units based on investor demand. Transactions under the new system will be completed at prices declared or determined by the respective asset managers.

DSE Managing Director Nuzhat Anwar said the platform was part of the exchange’s broader plan to modernise market infrastructure and create more investment choices.

“Ensuring integrated services for investors and creating opportunities to diversify their investment portfolios are part of our vision for modernising the exchange,” she said.

She added that the platform would make mutual fund investment easier, more transparent and technology-driven.

DSE Market Development Division General Manager Syed Mahmud Zubayer presented the proposed platform’s features, operational structure and workflow at the workshop.

Brokers to facilitate investors

Under the proposed arrangement, DSE stockbrokers will work as selling or dealing agents for asset management companies.

They will assist investors with buying, selling and redeeming mutual fund units through the platform.

DSE said the sale and redemption of open-ended mutual fund units will take place at prices declared or determined by the respective asset managers. The process will be governed by the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (Mutual Fund) Rules, 2025.

The exchange said the platform is part of its wider effort to modernise market infrastructure and introduce more diversified financial products.

For Bangladesh’s capital market, the initiative shifts attention from only increasing trading activity to building a broader investment ecosystem where investors have more choices beyond individual stocks.
