The second Test of the two-match series between India and South Africa in Guwahati will mark a unique moment in cricket history, with the tea break scheduled before lunch — a departure from traditional Test match routines.
Historically, Test matches follow a fixed sequence: toss, start of play, lunch, tea, and stumps. However, for the Guwahati Test, early sunrise and sunset in India’s northeast prompted a change in the day’s schedule. The first session will run from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a tea break from 11:00 AM to 11:20 AM. The afternoon session will then take place from 11:20 AM to 1:20 PM, after which lunch will be taken from 1:20 PM to 2:00 PM. The final session of the day is set from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
A source from the BCCI explained to the Indian Express, “The reason for early tea is that Guwahati experiences early sunsets and an early start. This is the first time we have altered the tea session, which will also help save time and provide extra playing time on the field.”
Traditionally, Test matches in India start at 9:30 AM, with lunch from 11:30 AM to 12:10 PM, and tea at 2:10 PM, followed by a final session from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
The BCCI has previously used the tea-before-lunch system for Ranji Trophy matches in Guwahati. The decision to apply the same arrangement for the second Test was made jointly by the BCCI and Cricket South Africa, ensuring the match adapts to local daylight conditions while maximising playtime.
