Mahdi Amin, advisor to the prime minister and spokesperson for the PMO, has called upon United States entrepreneurs to increase their investment in Bangladesh, describing the country as a highly attractive destination for business.

Addressing an event in Dhaka on Saturday to mark the 250th anniversary of United States Independence, Amin urged the American business community to highlight Bangladesh’s potential within their circles.

The programme was organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) and the US Embassy in Dhaka.

Strategic partnerships and roadshows

Mahdi Amin suggested that just as each US state has its own specialities, every district in Bangladesh possesses unique potential and characteristics.

He proposed the joint organisation of international roadshows, noting that while Bangladeshi institutions are already holding such events abroad, US companies could similarly conduct such activities within Bangladesh.

Amin emphasised that the success of an American company in Bangladesh would serve as the country’s greatest brand ambassador. He said the prime minister has provided clear instructions to warmly welcome foreign investment and provide maximum cooperation to investors.

Economic shifts and governance

Mahdi Amin noted that as the economy advances and the middle class expands, the internal market is becoming increasingly robust, making the country even more attractive to foreign investors.

He remarked that the new government has started with a fresh perspective, acknowledging that the previous long-standing governance did not reflect the true aspirations of the people.

“We are now moving forward with a clear development programme for every sector,” Amin said, adding that this presents a significant opportunity for the private sector.

He cited Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s view that the government’s responsibility is to formulate necessary policies and create an environment where the private sector can flourish.

Highlighting the government’s business-friendly stance, Amin pointed out that the national budget reflects a commitment to liberal economic policies and the reduction of unnecessary regulations.

He mentioned that the government solved long-standing complexities regarding profit repatriation within just one month of taking office.

The government is also seeking to involve the Bangladeshi diaspora in the country’s development. “We want to transform what we previously called ‘brain drain’ into ‘brain circulation,’ leveraging the merit and experience of Bangladeshis living in the US and elsewhere,” he said.

Future prospects and cooperation

Mahdi Amin expressed a desire for a level playing field to encourage foreign investment and job creation.

He announced that the government would hold regular dialogues through various ministries and create an open environment where investors can share ideas directly with the Honourable Prime Minister.

Key areas for deepened bilateral cooperation include Boeing, the energy sector, agriculture-based exports, light engineering, ICT, pharmaceuticals, and the ready-made garment (RMG) industry. Amin also highlighted Bangladesh’s large young population and skilled workforce as major strengths for foreign investors.

Expressing gratitude to the US and the international community for their role in restoring democracy in Bangladesh, Amin reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the rule of law, human rights, and freedom of expression.

“I represent a government elected by the people’s vote,” he stated, acknowledging that the massive public mandate carries a responsibility to ensure transparency, accountability, and good governance.

He concluded by thanking AmCham and the US Embassy for their role in strengthening bilateral trade and investment.
