Shamit Shome produced an impressive display for New York Cosmos as they beat Fort Wayne FC 4-2 in USL League One on Sunday.
The Bangladesh midfielder played a key role in the Cosmos attack. He registered two assists as his side secured an important away victory.
Shome set up New York’s opening goal just before half-time. He provided the pass for Jawneh Lamine, who found the net in the 44th minute.
His second assist came soon after the break and was the highlight of his performance. Shome spotted space in the Fort Wayne defence and played a well-weighted ball through the gap for Lamine. The forward made no mistake and finished the move to give the Cosmos a 3-0 lead in the 47th minute.
Fort Wayne pulled one back through Robert Becher in the 66th minute. However, Lamine struck again in the 71st minute to complete his hat-trick and restore New York’s three-goal advantage.
Fort Wayne scored a late penalty through Chris Awo u dor, but the Cosmos held on for a 4-2 win.
Shome finished the match with two assists and two chances created, including one big chance. He completed 30 of his 36 passes for an accuracy rate of 83 percent.
He also completed four of his five long balls and recorded 45 touches. On the defensive side, Shome made three tackles, two clearances, two recoveries and one blocked shot. He won three of his six ground duels.
The performance is also an encouraging sign after Shome’s recent injury problems. His display against Fort Wayne showed that he has regained fitness and form at an important time.
With the Asian Cup approaching, Shome’s return to form will also be welcome news for Bangladesh.
