After the 2024–25 season, India and Australia are set to face each other in a full five-Test series on Indian soil, nearly 48 years since the last such series. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy will run from January to March 2027, marking Australia’s first five-Test tour of India since 1979.
Historically, following the 1959, 1969, and 1979 pattern, Australia’s next five-Test series in India would have been expected in 1989. However, the tour was delayed for decades. Since 1979, Australia has toured India ten times for Tests, but five of those series were limited to a maximum of four matches, all occurring this century.
The BCCI announced the 2026–27 domestic and international cricket schedule yesterday, highlighting the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as the marquee event of the season. This will be India’s only Test series at home next season.
The first Test will begin on 21 January 2027 in Nagpur. The remaining four Tests will be held in Chennai (29 January–2 February), Guwahati (11–15 February), Ranchi (19–23 February), and Ahmedabad (27 February–3 March).
India currently sits sixth on the World Test Championship points table, while Australia leads. After a 2–0 home series defeat to South Africa last year, India faces significant pressure to perform in this series to remain in contention for the final.
India’s international season begins well before the Australia series. On 27 September 2026, India will host the West Indies for three ODIs and five T20s.
In December, Sri Lanka will tour India for three ODIs and three T20s, while India will travel to Zimbabwe in January 2027 for three ODIs ahead of the Australia Test series.
