Mumbai Police have detained Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and president of the organisation “Hum Bharat Ke Log.”
He was detained while on his way to attend a programme organised in Mumbai in support of the protest by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, reports Hindustan Times.
The programme was scheduled to be held at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai at 3:30pm on Saturday. Tushar Gandhi’s organisation had organised the event. Meanwhile, police also detained his associates following raids in various areas of Mumbai.
A police official said Tushar Gandhi was detained from the Bandra area and taken to DN Nagar police station. However, a post on Tushar Gandhi’s account on social media platform X mentioned that he was arrested and taken to an undisclosed location.
Police further said an associate of his, who is also the vice-president of the organisation, was detained from the Andheri area and taken to MIDC police station. However, police claimed that they were not arrested, but merely detained.
On Friday, Tushar Gandhi published a poster of the event alongside a post on X, calling upon the residents of Mumbai to gather at August Kranti Maidan at 3:30pm today.
Police stated that no application seeking permission for the programme had been submitted, and therefore permission for the event was not granted.
