Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud removed Sediqullah Atal as Afghanistan reached 34 for one at lunch on the second day of the one-off Test in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
Afghanistan were trailing by 312 runs after Bangladesh were bowled out for 346 earlier in the morning.
Hasan troubled the Afghan openers from the start. He bowled seven overs, conceded just 11 runs and picked up the only wicket of the session.
Atal survived an early chance when he was batting on four. Hasan found the outside edge of his bat, and wicketkeeper Litton Das completed the catch.
However, the umpire turned down Bangladesh’s appeal. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto did not take a review, allowing Atal to continue.
The opener could not make the most of that chance.
He later chased a delivery well outside off stump and edged it to Shanto at slip. Atal departed for 17 off 31 balls, leaving Afghanistan at 30 for one.
The wicket came shortly before lunch, with Afghanistan reaching 34 for one after 13 overs.
Abdul Malik remained unbeaten on 15, while Shahidullah Kamal was not out on two.
Malik also survived two chances during the session. An outside edge went between the slip fielders before another shot fell just short of Tanzid Hasan Tamim.
Earlier, Bangladesh resumed their first innings at 317 for eight but could add only 29 runs before losing their remaining wickets.
Nayeem Hasan scored most of those runs and remained unbeaten on 35 off 67 balls.
Taijul Islam made nine, while Ebadot Hossain departed for a duck.
Mohammad Saleem finished with four wickets for 82 runs for Afghanistan.
Bangladesh’s first innings was built around three half-centuries. Tanzid top-scored with 83, Shadman Islam made 67 and Litton added 53.
Bangladesh will now look to take more wickets in the second session after Hasan’s early breakthrough.
