Thakurgaon District Jamaat Ameer Belal Uddin Pradhan, arrested at Saidpur Airport with cash, has been admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital after suffering from a heart attack.
He was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital’s Cardiology Department around 3:45pm on Wednesday. Earlier, following his arrest, he developed chest pain while in police custody and was taken to Saidpur Hospital in Nilphamari.
Dr Haripada Roy, head of the Cardiology Department at Rangpur Medical, stated that he was admitted to the hospital with chest pain. The doctor said that his ECG showed abnormalities and that he already suffers from various ailments, including diabetes.
Tests are currently ongoing, the doctor added.
Professor Azharul Islam of the Cardiology Department at Rangpur Community Medical College Hospital, who is in charge of his treatment, said, “He is not yet out of danger. It will be confirmed after the test results whether he requires an angiogram. However, it appears he has had a heart attack.”
Earlier, at around 10:55am on Wednesday, he disembarked from a US-Bangla flight at Saidpur Airport. Subsequently, Saidpur Thana police took him into custody along with a bag full of cash.
During questioning at that time, he informed them that the bag contained over Tk50 lakh, which he claimed was from his garments business.
Shahjalal Airport’s Executive Director, Group Captain SM Rajib Hasan, stated that, with customs clearance, he was permitted to transport the bag full of cash on a domestic route, with there being no restriction on the amount of cash one can carry domestically.
Meanwhile, in a press briefing, Jamaat’s Media Department official Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair informed that the Jamaat leader had been transporting the money from his personal business. He also alleged that misinformation was being spread regarding this matter.
Nilphamari Police Superintendent Sheikh Zahidul Islam stated that the seized cash and the documents he presented are being verified. Legal action will be taken on this matter once that has been completed.
Rangpur Range DIG Aminul Islam stated that a general diary has been filed regarding this incident and the matter will be handed over to the Electoral Inquiry Committee.
Later, police sources informed that Tk74 lakh was seized from the Jamaat leader.
