Awami League (AL) activists marked International Mother Language Day on Saturday by reopening a party office in Narail after 18 months and chanting slogans in Gaibandha.
The office at Manikganj Bazar was inaugurated in the morning through the hoisting of the national flag.
Narail District Swechchhasebak League Vice-President Kazi Abdul Alim led party members at the programme.
Activists chanted slogans, including “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu”.
Video footage of the event, which later went viral on social media, showed activists chanting “Who says Mujib is not here? Mujib is all over Bengal” and “Sheikh Hasina will come, Bangladesh will smile”.
Kazi Abdul Alim confirmed the reopening in a Facebook post, stating that the Bangladesh Awami League No 4 Noagram Union Manikganj Bazar regional office was inaugurated by hoisting the national flag in honour of Great 21 February.
Lohagara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdur Rahman said police were aware of the incident.
“We have heard about the matter, and a police team has been sent to the spot. We are looking into it,” he said.
Two AL leaders arrested at Gaibandha Shaheed Minar
Meanwhile, police in Gaibandha arrested two Awami League (AL) leaders at around 3pm on Saturday while they were attempting to place wreaths at the Municipal Shaheed Minar.
The arrestees were identified as Imarul Islam Sabin, 64, former General Secretary of Gaibandha District Jubo League and Industry and Commerce Secretary of the Awami League (whose activities were banned under the interim government), and Shahin Chakdar, 48, a member of the district AL.
According to local sources and police, a group led by Sabin chanted slogans demanding the return of the ousted Sheikh Hasina government while paying tribute.
Police chased the group and detained the two leaders.
Gaibandha Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Al Mamun said the two were shown arrested in a case over vandalism and arson at the district Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) office during the 2024 mass uprising.
They were later sent to jail by court order, he added.
