Members of the Bangladesh Army arrested Sohel Jahan Chowdhury, a former union parishad chairman, in Cox’s Bazar.
Sohel, a member of the Eidgaon Upazila unit of the Awami League (whose activities are currently banned), was apprehended around 6am on Thursday from his residence in the Jagirpara area of Eidgaon upazila.
Later, he was handed over to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station.
According to sources, Sohel is an accused in several cases, including charges of murder and July uprising.
Sohel recently drew significant criticism and sparked a public outcry after he sought votes for the “Sheaf of Paddy” symbol and BNP candidate for the Cox’s Bazar-3 constituency, Lutfur Rahman Kajal, during a courtyard meeting at his home.
Most recently, on 28 January, he was seen publicly campaigning for the “Sheaf of Paddy” in the Palpara area and other parts of the union alongside leaders and activists of BNP’s affiliate organisations.
He was arrested the following morning.
ATM Sifatul Mazdar, officer-in-charge (OC), confirmed the arrest and said that the Army had transferred him to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station after the detention.
