After facing widespread discussion on social media following her appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has received public support from fellow Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit, who has criticised attempts to judge the actor based on her appearance, age and body shape.
The debate emerged after photographs of Aishwarya at Cannes prompted a wave of online commentary, including criticism of her clothing, physical appearance and weight.
Speaking to Indian news agency PTI, Madhuri said it was unfair to assess an internationally recognised figure such as Aishwarya solely through the lens of appearance.
According to Madhuri, Aishwarya has represented India on the global stage for more than two decades and has brought considerable recognition to the country during that time.
“A person’s success, contribution and personality should not be reduced to their weight, dress size or age,” Madhuri said. “Aishwarya deserves appreciation not only for her beauty but also for her personality and human qualities.”
The actor also warned that negative comments about public figures could send the wrong message, particularly to younger generations.
“Such remarks can create the impression that a person’s worth depends only on their appearance rather than their achievements or work. That mindset is extremely harmful and needs to change,” she said.
Madhuri also reflected on the role of social media in amplifying criticism. While noting that critical voices have always existed, she said digital platforms now allow opinions to spread much more quickly and widely than before.
As a result, she argued, negative commentary often reaches a larger audience and gains momentum at a far greater pace than in previous decades.
