Young dancer Rudmila Priyanti Chowdhury has launched her first book, Bharatanatyam, focusing on the fundamentals of the classical Indian dance form.
The book was unveiled at a ceremony at Aloki Convention Centre in Tejgaon, Dhaka, on 25 September. Written in English, it introduces readers to the basic aspects of Bharatanatyam.
Dancer, artistic director and researcher Lubna Mariam, Ekushey Padak-winning dancer Arthi Ahmed, Nova Ahmed, Ozia Ahmed and physician and dancer Naila Khan attended the event. Artists, writers and cultural figures were also present.
Speakers highlighted the book’s potential contribution to the study, practice and understanding of Bharatanatyam. They said its English-language presentation could also help readers in Bangladesh and abroad learn about the dance form.
Rudmila has practised Bharatanatyam for 12 years and is also involved in research and academic study of dance. She completed a diploma in dance from Kolpotoru in 2022.
Rudmila said she wrote the book to present the fundamentals of Bharatanatyam in a simple way. She chose English because many students at Kolpotoru come from English-medium backgrounds. She also plans to publish a Bengali edition soon.
The book is available through Rokomari.com and Jatra’s Facebook page.
