BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday expressed deep grief over the passing of Language Movement veteran Ahmed Rafiq, saying he will be remembered forever for his role in protecting the dignity of the mother tongue.
In his condolence message, Fakhrul described him as “a brave soldier of the Language Movement.” He said Rafiq’s lifelong contribution to Bangla, as well as to literature and culture, had earned him an indelible place in the nation’s history.
“Alongside being a physician, he made significant contributions to literature and culture. His working life will remain a source of inspiration for generations to come,” Fakhrul said.
He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his sympathy to Rafiq’s bereaved family.
Language Movement veteran Ahmed Rafiq, also revered as a poet, essayist and Rabindra researcher, breathed his last on Thursday night while undergoing treatment at BIRDEM Hospital in Dhaka. He was 96.
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, in a separate condolence message, said Rafiq’s legacy as a witness of the Language Movement and as a guiding voice in Bangla literature and Rabindra studies will inspire generations across Bangladesh and West Bengal.
