Two police officers came under attack by suspected drug dealers while attempting to arrest a suspect wanted in drug and theft cases in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat late on Friday.
The incident occurred around midnight in Gendukuri village under Tongbhanga Union.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Ruhul Amin of Hatibandha Police Station sustained critical injuries in the attack and was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Latif also suffered injuries.
According to police and local residents, the two officers went to Gendukuri village to arrest Rashed, who is wanted under arrest warrants in drug and theft cases. As they attempted to apprehend him, the suspect and his associates, armed with locally made weapons, launched a surprise attack on the officers.
SI Ruhul Amin suffered serious injuries to his head and other parts of his body. With the help of local residents, the injured officers were rescued and taken to Hatibandha Upazila Health Complex. The attending physician later referred SI Ruhul Amin to Rangpur Medical College Hospital after his condition deteriorated. He is currently undergoing treatment there.
Officer-in-Charge of Hatibandha Police Station Ramzan Ali said police had already filed a case over the attack. He added that a special operation was underway to arrest Rashed and his associates involved in the assault.
