Minhajul Abedin, former chief selector of the Bangladesh national cricket team, has credited a consistent development system for Rishad Hossain’s recent success and has called on the selection panel to take greater responsibility in nurturing more leg-spinners for the future.
Rishad, who recently made headlines with a six-wicket haul against the West Indies in the first ODI, has emerged as a rare leg-spin talent in Bangladesh cricket. According to Abedin, bringing Rishad into the national setup was far from easy.
“We went through a lot of struggle when we brought Rishad in,” Abedin told the media. “After that, we kept him within a regular system, which is why he has reached this level today.”
Rishad’s success, however, also highlights a concerning lack of depth in the leg-spin department. Abedin believes that more attention must be paid to identifying and nurturing talent in this area.
“I think we need more leg-spinners for the country,” he said. “They need to be nurtured in good environments. The selection panel has to take a lot of responsibility here.”
Abedin’s comments reflect a broader concern within Bangladesh cricket about the limited number of specialist leg-spinners and the need for long-term planning to address this gap.
