The upcoming national election will be held before February 15, regardless of the government’s decision on the proposed referendum, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam confirmed on Friday.
“There is no force that can delay the election,” he said while speaking at the ‘Mindbridge and Knowledge Competition 2025’ organiaed by the July Konna Foundation at Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU).
The Press Secretary noted that the final decision on the referendum will rest with the Chief Adviser, but assured that “whatever the outcome, the election will be held on time.”
Highlighting the interim government’s recent initiatives, Shafiqul Alam said, “The Chief Adviser is working for the welfare of the people, the interests of democracy, and for the benefit of all political parties. The government has already announced and signed the July Charter.”
He also stated that operations to recover illegal firearms are being carried out nationwide in preparation for the election. “You’ve seen some arms recovered last week. A monthly report is being compiled on these operations,” he added.
Regarding the ongoing trial of Sheikh Hasina, he mentioned that the interim government is actively proceeding with the case. “The date for Sheikh Hasina’s trial will likely be announced on the 13 November. Meanwhile, election activities are in full swing.”
Commenting on the Awami League’s flash processions, Shafiqul Alam remarked, “Even if they march for 50 years like this, it will bring no result.”
The event was presided over by July Konna Foundation President Jannatun Naeem Prami Jannatun Naeem Prami, with Prof Dr Mohammad Ismail, vice-chancellor of NSTU, Rezwanul Haque, pro-vice-chancellor, and Ismail Hossain, additional deputy commissioner of Noakhali, were also present.
Earlier in the programme, the Press Secretary praised women’s contributions to the July Movement, saying, “Women played a significant role. They stood bravely beside the participants during the movement.”
