A journalist and two others were injured when a group of assailants attacked a BNP meeting in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur on Saturday afternoon.
The injured include Rocky Hossain, a cameraman for Jamuna TV’s Gazipur district unit, Sakhawat Hossain Selim, a member of Gazipur District BNP Convening Committee, and his driver Delwar Hossain, according to BNP sources. Rocky was admitted to Shaheed Taj Uddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for treatment, confirmed Kapasia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Joynal Abedin Mandal.
The meeting, organised by the local BNP unit, began at around noon on Saturday at the Cheragaali intersection. Around 2pm, a group of 20-25 motorcycle-riding individuals stormed the venue, vandalising the stage, chairs, and tables. Witnesses reported that as Rocky and others attempted to document the incident, the attackers assaulted them.
Selim said, “The attackers chanted slogans in the name of Gazipur District BNP Joint Convener Shah Riazul Hannan. They have repeatedly disrupted our programs in the past.”
When contacted, Hannan denied involvement, stating, “I visited the injured journalist at the hospital. If investigation proves any party members were involved, we will take action.”
OC Joynal confirmed police deployment to the scene and verified at least three injuries in the incident. No case had been filed as of filing this report.
