The High Court has directed the formation of an experts’ committee to review the overall safety of Dhaka Metro Rail and investigate the recent fatal accident, ordering the submission of a report within 30 days.
The move follows the death of a pedestrian after a bearing pad fell in Farmgate. This petition named the secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and other concerned officials as respondents.
The directive came from a High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Asif Hossain on Wednesday.
On 27 October, Supreme Court lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun filed a writ petition with the High Court in public interest, seeking the formation of a committee to assess the quality of bearing pads on Metro Rail and all flyovers.
Earlier, a bearing pad from the shock absorber of the Metro Rail line fell from pillar number 433 on the west side of the Farmgate Metro Station on Sunday afternoon, killing pedestrian Abul Kalam Azad, 35.
Azad, who worked in the private sector, is survived by a son and a daughter. At the time of the incident, he was walking along the pavement in front of the Khamarbari Agricultural Institute beneath the Farmgate Metro Station.
Following the incident, a five-member investigation committee was formed on Monday under the chairmanship of Secretary of the Bridges Division Mohammad Abdur Rouf. The committee has been instructed to submit its findings within two weeks and to include recommendations to prevent such accidents in the future.
