Metro rail operations restarted on a limited scale after being shut down earlier Sunday due to technical fault, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) said. Trains are currently running only between Uttara and Agargaon stations.
Earlier on Sunday afternoon, metro rail authorities halted operations across the entire Uttara-Motijheel route after a bearing pad from the metro line fell outside the Farmgate station, killing a pedestrian. The deceased was identified as Abul Kalam Azad, who died around 12pm.
Following the incident, DMTCL issued a notice apologising for the inconvenience caused to passengers as train operations were suspended.
The sudden halt left passengers stranded across multiple stations, pushing many to rely on road transport. This caused heavy traffic congestion in several parts of the city, along with a shortage of available public buses.
Metro authorities experienced a similar problem in September last year when another bearing pad slipped from a structure. That incident halted train movement for nearly 11 hours, but caused no injuries.
