Sarjis Alam, chief organiser for the northern region of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has alleged that the Election Commission is acting with bias by refusing to allocate the party’s preferred “Shapla” (water lily) symbol.
He warned that if the commission fails to show independence in its decision-making, the party will initiate a movement demanding the reconstitution of the EC.
Speaking to journalists after a coordination meeting of NCP at the Kishoreganj District Shilpakala Academy on Sunday afternoon, Sarjis said the commission must demonstrate independence in the post-uprising situation.
“If the Election Commission fails to show neutrality and independence, we will not be able to trust them in the upcoming election. If we need to take to the streets politically to secure the Shapla symbol, NCP will also launch a movement to reconstitute the authoritarian Election Commission,” he said.
Criticising the administration, he claimed that different officials still act favouring different political parties.
“Some behave in favour of BNP, some in favour of Jamaat, and some maintain their past link to Awami League. We clearly tell them – they have escaped accountability this time. But if they keep doing this and we are forced into another major confrontation, no one will be spared,” he said.
“Do not remain a partisan administration – become the administration of Bangladesh,” he urged.
He further alleged that individuals aligned with Awami League remain at various levels of the judiciary and help secure bail for accused in major murder cases through bribery or political negotiation.
Sarjis cautioned that without strict action from the interim government and relevant ministries, national stability and the election process could be pushed into uncertainty.
The meeting was chaired by Joint Member Secretary Ahnaf Saeed Khan, with Dhaka Divisional Organising Secretary Saifullah Hyder and central leaders Khairul Kabir and Didar Shah in attendance.
