A total of 11 suspects have been arrested within 24 hours over the murder of Sub-Inspector (SI) Altaf Hossain in Savar’s Aminbazar. The prime suspect in the killing has also been placed on a five-day remand.
The prime accused and private car owner, Zahirul Islam, was produced before the court with a 10-day remand prayer, of which the court granted five days.
Zahirul had been arrested earlier by SI Zakir Al Hasan, the Aminbazar Police Outpost in-charge and the investigation officer of the case.
Meanwhile, the police have sent eight other suspects to court with a seven-day remand prayer. These eight individuals were arrested in separate operations by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and handed over to the Savar Model Police Station.
Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam confirmed that the police have arrested two additional suspects whose names are yet to be confirmed, bringing the total number of arrests to 11.
The Incident According to RAB, the incident took place in Bardeshi area of Aminbazar on 5 September between 8:30pm and 11pm.
The clash began over an autorickshaw parking dispute when SI Altaf, 58, protested the suspects beating up an autorickshaw garage owner.
When the officer identified himself as a member of the police force, the suspects grew increasingly aggressive.
A group of 15 to 20 criminals gathered, broke the gate of Altaf’s son’s factory, and brutally beat both the officer and his younger son, Ariful, with sticks and local weapons.
Both victims were rushed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared SI Altaf dead.
RAB reported that several juvenile offenders and individuals accused in drug-related cases were involved in the killing.
Following the incident, the victim’s wife, Shiuly Akhter, filed a case naming 15 individuals with the Savar Model Police Station.
In separate operations to apprehend the named suspects, RAB-10 arrested four suspects on Sunday night at the Munshiganj Sadar launch ghat area.
They have been identified as Alauddin, 26, Apon, 30, Jihad, 20, and Imran, 26, all residents of Aminbazar.
Additionally, RAB-4 arrested four more suspects in Aminbazar: Nur Mohammad Rudra, 24, Md Rakib Miah, 28, Sabbir Ahmed, 24, and Md Wasim, 40.
