Across the country, 49 isolated incidents have occurred centring Durga Puja from 1 September to 29 September. In connection with these incidents, 19 people have been arrested in 15 cases that were filed.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam provided this information at a press conference at the police headquarters on Tuesday.
He said, “None of these incidents surrounding Durga Puja created any major trouble. We have resolved them peacefully.”
The IGP said, “Police are working to the utmost to ensure that communal harmony is not disrupted in any way.”
When asked for detail regarding these incidents, Baharul Alam informed journalists that the cases include throwing water at puja pavilions, fallen and broken idols, extortion money rackets around puja committees, among others.
Additional IGP (Crime and Ops) of Police Headquarters Khandker Rafiqul Islam provided another example: “There are incidents such as someone in Chattogram, identifying as a Jamaat worker, going to a pavilion and ordering the music to be stopped. The accused person in this incident has already been arrested. However, local Jamaat leaders have stated that he has no connection with the party.”
