Bangladesh has urged Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states to deliver urgent, predictable, and sustained support for the Rohingya response.
The call comes as prolonged displacement enters almost a decade, creating growing risks to regional peace and stability.
In a statement to the OIC Contact Group on Rohingya, Bangladesh noted it shelters over 1.3 million Forcefully Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN).
Since early 2024, more than 140,000 new arrivals have heightened pressure on the overstretched humanitarian response.
Additionally, between 30,000 and 35,000 children are born in the camps each year.
Bangladesh warned that prolonged displacement fuels irregular maritime movements, human trafficking, drug trafficking, and transnational crime.
Reaffirming that the crisis originated in Myanmar and must be resolved there, Bangladesh emphasised that the ultimate objective remains the safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable return of the Rohingya with guaranteed rights and security.
Bangladesh welcomed the OIC’s prioritisation of Rohingya repatriation in its ‘Ten-Year Programme of Action 2026–2035’.
On financial requirements, Bangladesh highlighted that the 2026 Joint Response Plan requires $710.5 million to assist 1.56 million Rohingya and host community members.
This appeal is 26% lower than in 2025 due to humanitarian financing constraints, reflecting global mobilisation limits rather than a drop in actual needs.
Regarding legal accountability, Bangladesh commended OIC support for The Gambia’s case against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Bangladesh has contributed approximately $1.3 million to the OIC Fund for Rohingyas.
The matter will be considered at the forthcoming Council of Foreign Ministers in Baghdad.
Bangladesh proposed three immediate priorities: maintaining unified diplomatic pressure through the United Nations and ASEAN; mobilising resources for the 2026 Joint Response Plan; and strengthening international justice mechanisms.
Urging that humanitarian fatigue must not turn into political indifference, Bangladesh called on the OIC to maintain active engagement until a durable solution is achieved.
