National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhter Hossen has filed a case against Awami League activists in New York in response to an attack on Hossen and fellow party leader Tasnim Jara as they were exiting John F Kennedy airport.
He announced the lawsuit in a video message posted on NCP’s official Facebook page on Thursday Bangladesh time.
In the video, he said, “After the airport attack, on Wednesday evening local time, Awami terrorists came to the hotel lobby with intentions to attack again. At that time, NCP members and well-wishers residing in the US resisted their attempts and contacted the police.”
“Later, the police investigation officer advised us to file a case,” Hossen went on. “Based on that advice, I went to the nearest police station. We have filed a case against those who attacked us, attempted to kill us, and threatened us.”
Akhter had arrived in New York as part of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’ delegation to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
On Monday afternoon, while exiting Terminal 4 of the airport, local Jubo League activist Mizanur Rahman threw eggs at Akhter Hossen. He was also accused of attempting to stab a BNP activist.
Video footage of the incident allowed authorities to identify the suspect, who was wearing a black cap and shirt.
Mizan was arrested by New York police that same night but was released on bail the following day. During a speech to Awami League activists, which was uploaded to Facebook, he confessed to the attack. Party members welcomed him with garlands and slogans of “Joy Bangla.”
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and protests. The Chief Adviser’s Press Wing responded: “Whether in Bangladesh or abroad, the interim government will not tolerate any acts of political violence or intimidation.”
