Mizanur Rahman Swapan, president of Ward No. 28 of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Thana BNP in Dhaka, has been detained by SRB-2 on charges of extortion.

Following his detention on Monday, he was handed over to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, according to Ibne Mizan, deputy commissioner of Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

“He was detained by SRB and later handed over to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station,” the deputy commissioner said.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Amrita, duty officer at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, told TIMES that Mizanur Rahman Swapan is currently in police custody. She added that no case has been filed yet and details will be disclosed later.

According to police and SRB sources, extortion allegations have been raised against Swapan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and Mohammadpur areas.

Officials said the allegations against him include extortion from Chhoytala Garments, operating an ambulance syndicate at Neuroscience Hospital, extortion from footpaths in the Agargaon Notun Rasta area, and collecting monthly extortion money from drug dealers at Samabay Slum adjacent to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
